Posturography

A posturography test is also called a balance test, and an ENT performs the test to determine if a person has balance issues caused by a problem with the inner ear or vestibular system. It is a non-invasive procedure that tests people’s ability to maintain their balance while standing on a moving pedestal. Doctors or ENT professionals evaluate the result to diagnose health problems and come up with treatment options.

Why a Person May Need a Posturography Test

People who need a posturography test are usually suffering from some type of ear, nose, or throat problem. They may be experiencing a variety of different symptoms that can lead doctors to believe the patients are suffering from an infection or another problem. Some common symptoms of an ear, nose, or throat problem include:

Preparing for a Posturography Test

Doctors can perform a posturography test with little notice, and preparations are not usually necessary. If patients are taking certain medications that affect their balance, doctors may ask them to stop taking them before the test. Some patients may have to eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before the test as well. Some doctors may have specific orders for patients. It is important to follow these orders as it may affect the outcome of the test.

During a Posturography

During the test, patients will stand on a platform. The platform will move and turn to test the patient’s ability to stay balanced. The platform is connected to a computer that reads the results. When the patient moves or loses balance, the computer records it. The computer then processes the results and comes up with a score.

Posturography Recovery

There is usually no recovery time needed. But it is a good idea for patients who will undergo the test to have someone drive them to and from the hospital. Some patients may feel dizzy and nauseous after the exam. These feelings should reside after a few hours.

Posturography Complications

There are usually no complications caused by a posturography exam. Patient with balance disorder or inner ear issues may find that these conditions are aggravated during the test. Patients who suffer from pain problems or mobility issues may also have a hard time completing the test. Doctors are usually able to work with patients to help them complete the test.

Posturography Results

The test can show doctors if patients have a problem with balance. It can also help them determine the reason for the problem.  The results tell the doctors how bad the patients struggle and the way they lose balance. If the balance is coming from a problem with the joints or muscles, it could be a misalignment or an injury is to blame for the problems. If there is no clear relation to the muscles, joints, or bones, it could mean the problem is something in the vestibular system that needs to be treated by an ENT.
