Dealing With a Diabetes Diagnosis: How to Ease the Pain

No matter the circumstances, being diagnosed with a health condition is a tough pill to swallow. Apart from the anguish of your condition, you experience a range of difficult emotions such as denial, fear, anxiety, and sometimes even anger.

Diabetes is a condition that affects over 34 million Americans. In other words, just over one out of every ten Americans has been diagnosed with this condition. This diagnosis can be both emotionally taxing and physically painful. If you’re struggling to deal with this diagnosis, here’s how you can ease the pain.

Control Your Blood Sugar

Controlling your blood sugar is essential to deplete the pain of diabetes. Simple ways to do this include drinking plenty of water, exercising more frequently, introducing vinegar into your diet, as well as eating more fibre and fewer carbohydrates. Check out some of these great low-carb recipes.

Use Over the Counter Painkillers

Over the counter painkillers, such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen can help alleviate mild symptoms of pain. However, it’s important to consult with your doctor before you take any medication to make sure it’s safe to do so.

Try Pain Relief Massages

Relaxation and pain relief massages can help with circulation problems, anxiety, and depression. It’s always a good idea to look for a masseuse that’s specialized in this field. However, a foot massager for diabetics is also a handy tool to have that can provide instant relief from the comfort of your own home.

Stock Up on Vitamin D

If you live in a place with plenty of sunshine, make sure to sit outside and soak up some rays of Vitamin D. This vitamin can help with your insulin release and sensitivity, so it’s important to boost your intake. Adversely, you can opt for eating more oily fish, like sardines and mackerel, or purchase supplements.

Take a Warm Bath

Another way to overcome some of the pain caused by diabetes is by taking a warm and relaxing bath. If your stress levels are high, your body will be on edge and your muscles will be tight, which is not ideal for circulation. Try to make this a weekly or even nightly ritual. Light some candles, grab a great book, sit back and relax.

Speak To a Professional

Sometimes it’s the emotional pain that cuts deeper than the physical pain of diabetes. Being diagnosed with a medical condition can be tough, which is why you should look after your mental health as well as your physical one. Don’t be afraid to reach out to a therapist or perhaps even a support group in your area.

Hopefully, these tips help ease your pain and make life a little bit easier. If you find yourself in serious pain, you should seek medical attention immediately. Don’t hesitate to book an appointment with your local medic or call an ambulance if needed. Some days may be worse than others but carry on battling and keep yourself healthy.
