5 Ways To Enhance Your Current Skincare Routine

Elevating your skincare routine can go far beyond the basics. While cleansing your skin, or even just washing your face in the shower, is common knowledge, there is a world of skincare beyond that.

Enhancing your skincare routine lets you discover the power of targeted treatments, protective sunscreens, and rejuvenating moisturizers. With everything from exfoliants to hydration, you can transform your skin in a matter of weeks.

It’s time to take your skincare journey to the next level and enhance your routine with these few tips.

Targeted Treatments

Following a basic skincare routine of cleansing and then moisturizing is a great start when looking after the health of your skin, but if you want to take your skincare to the next level, you should consider targeted treatments like serums and essences.

While both serums and essences are applied to the skin after cleansing as a lightweight, targeted treatment, they have their differences, as Misumi Skincare explains.

Serum

  • High concentration of active ingredients
  • Thicker in texture
  • Potent benefits
  • Can be layered with other products

Essence

  • Primarily provide hydration
  • Watery texture
  • Lightweight and soothing
  • Not as potent as serums

Both serums and essences are great additions to any skincare routine. When choosing the right products, always consider your skin type and remember to apply the essence or serum before moisturizing.

Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliating your skin is yet another great addition to your skincare routine. Many neglect this step and might see it as unnecessary, but once you start exfoliating, you’ll never go back.

There are two types of exfoliants: chemical and physical. Although they work differently, they offer very similar benefits.

  • Remove dead skin cells
  • Prevent acne
  • Enhance skincare absorption
  • Cleanse pores
  • Prevent ingrown hairs
  • Improve blood circulation

When using an exfoliator, do so in moderation. An exfoliator should only be used every few days to prevent skin irritation and sensitivity. Frequent exfoliation can also cause microtears on the skin, which can lead to infection.

Moisturise

Undoubtedly, the most important step in any skincare routine is moisturizing. The act of washing your face, while still removing any dirt, grime, and buildup, also removes important natural oils on the surface of the skin that act as protection.

Moisturizers reintroduce hydration to your skin. Moisturizers also create a defensive barrier on the skin’s surface, which can aid in a healthy appearance, reduce wrinkles, minimize dryness and peeling, and encourage wound and acne healing.

The act of moisturizing is a simple step to take when looking after your skin to the best of your ability.

Use Sun Protection

Many view sunscreen as a tool to be used when protecting against the sun when spending time outdoors. People will religiously apply it when they go swimming, hiking, or even just spending the day outside at the park.

Sunscreen should be applied to your face every morning, even if you don’t have any big plans to be outside. The sun is all around us and can reach us in our cars, through our windows, and even on a short walk outside.

Using sunscreen on a daily basis will protect your skin from any kind of sun damage, prevent premature aging, and even help avoid skin cancer. While it may seem like a silly step to take if you are going to be sitting at your desk in an office all day, research has shown that it is far more beneficial to apply sunscreen every day as opposed to just on the days when you know you will be out in the sun.

Remove your makeup before going to bed

The last tip to follow when enhancing your skincare routine is to remove your makeup before going to bed. Even on those long days when all you want to do is crawl into bed and go to sleep, always take your makeup off first.

Sleeping with your makeup on can not only make your pillow dirty but also lead to clogged pores, and eye irritation, and promote long-term skin health.

It will also allow your skincare to work more effectively, promote a healthy skin barrier, and let your skin breathe.
