5 Tips for Expediting The Medical License Application Process

Medical education is not a piece of cake. It takes a lot of effort and guts to get into a medical school, and even more to graduate with a medical degree. The preparation for USMLE (the United States Medical Licensing Examination) requires genuine hard work and persistence over years to clear every step.

For a layman, getting into medical school in itself is a tremendous feat. For a medical student, getting admitted and subsequently clearing the USMLE is just the beginning. Once done, the student eyes the difficult path ahead of applying for a medical license, getting affiliated with some hospital setting, and start gaining professional experience as a practicing healthcare individual.

Securing a medical license may seem to be an uphill task for most budding doctors. It starts with a medical license application and involves a lengthy process with precise paperwork and certifications. Most doctors have the least idea regarding where to start and what are the steps. Furthermore, each state has its licensing board and a unique process. The medical professional may require securing a medical license from multiple states or from a state which is different from the state of his study or residence.

The medical license application is frequently done simultaneously in multiple states, making it cumbersome to follow up the process on multiple fronts while focusing on other parallel aspects of the career such as scheduling interviews and listing prospective job offers at medical professional institutes or hospitals.

At such a juncture, it would prove to be a blessing if there is a helping hand with professional experience which guides us to get over this process with minimal time consumption and trouble. We would like to throw light on certain tips which may prove to help expedite the medical license application.

Prepare and upload a CV (Curriculum Vitae)

A CV is an integral part of any licensure application. Healthcare professional license process requires the individual to provide an overview of one’s grades, certificates, talents, and special skills. A well-written CV is the most effective tool to crisply communicate your strengths and ensure your eligibility for getting licensed. It is recommended to be ready with your CV and send the same to the licensing board well in advance while applying for a medical license.

Checklist of licensure requirements

You need to make sure to communicate with your respective licensing board regarding the latest and updated list of medical board requirements. Most licensing boards provide this information on their website. It is necessary to make sure that the most updated list is being worked on and that no confusion arises later on regarding missing documents or ineligibility. If one particular record or document is missing and you get to know that just a day before the deadline, you are sure to miss it. Always plan and take care of the timeline concerning the time required for procuring the documents as well as the time taken by the board to process your application; so that further activities can be planned accordingly.

Full disclosure

It is advisable, to be frank. It always helps in the long run. Some setback or negative event is part of almost all professional careers. It is better to reveal it rather than take a chance that the board will never know about it; because if it does, it may create a major problem in your licensure process. The better your clarity about your application, the greater the chance that it will be taken through smoothly without queries and may even save time in the long run. So it is better, to be honest, earlier, rather than to be sorry later.

Follow it up

These are times of open communication. Most licensing boards assist or help over email. It is advisable to stay in touch with the helpdesk and keep a track of your licensure application. Most of the time, delays are avoided due to persistent follow-up and communication. The query gets solved as soon as it is raised, and it saves valuable time and frustration on part of the medical professional. It is better to stay on the board rather than to sit back and relax.

Patience is a virtue

Being on the toes is one thing, being patient is another. Healthcare professional license process involves a lot of responsibility towards society, as handling another life is not an easy task. Likewise, the licensing boards make sure that they are giving the license to the correct professionals. To ensure this fact, they have created a step-by-step process to make sure things are in place and no one can be blamed later on. This process demands at least 60-days’ time and delays may also happen; however, there is no other option but to wait it out.
