I had a seizure while working on a golf course. It was only in the high 70s so it wasn't a hot day especially considering I live in South Carolina. I was taken to Waccamaw Community Hospital (maybe called Tidelands now) because it was close to my residence. I don't remember anything from the time I collapsed until I woke up in the ambulance about 30 minutes later. The EMT told me that they got me to come to at one point and asked me my name, which I knew, and then my age. I told them I was 15. He asked me if I was sure, and I was told later by a co-worker who was present at the scene I responded...uuh yeah! Like a young teenager would say like duh. I was 41 so obviously there was still some confusion or disconnect. Apparently I passed back out and woke back up in the ambulance about 10 minutes later. I didn't remember any of that happening. The EMTs were very nice and got me to the hospital. I never had a seizure before so after a few questions from the doctor he ordered a ct scan which came up negative. He told me they were going to order an MRI to be done at an outside location. I informed them I did not have insurance and could not afford to pay out of pocket at one time for an expensive procedure. The last MRI I had to pay for out of pocket cost me $1200. They told me they could not do the procedure on the premises, and I would have to try and work something out. So as I was not having any dizzy spells at the time and my vitals were back to normal they discharged me. The hospital was supposed to send a referral to a local facility that did MRI's. When I got home I contacted the facility they had on the paperwork, but no referral had been made. I asked the person at the facility if I would have to pay for the whole MRI up front, or if I could make payments? They told me it had to be fully paid in advance of the procedure. I contacted the hospital and told them that the referral for my MRI was never sent, and that I needed the doctor to contact the facility and talk to them about letting me set up some type of payment structure. Considering I've never previously had a seizure, and don't have epilepsy, but have had a few concussions in my life I didn't feel that was too much to ask. I didn't hear back from anyone for a week. When I was finally contacted the person apologized for the mistake but said there was nothing they can do about the other facilities financial policies. I asked can't you make a phone call and she said she was very sorry but the doctors are very busy and don't have time to contact people about payment. Realizing I was not going to get any help on the matter I simply said I'm sure they are very busy. I'm also sure there is someone there who could make that call if you really wanted to help, but since there's no money in it for you I guess that's just too much to ask. Thanks anyway. I understand that I don't have insurance so that puts me on the low rung of the totem pole. And I appreciate them getting me to the hospital and giving me the ct scan, but considering what we are starting to learn about the effects of concussions I believe they should have made a little more effort. It's now almost a year later, and I still have not been able to get the MRI done. I am not the type of person who would normally post a public negative review because I believe there are way too many people who complain on these type of forums, but it's an honest review and I feel it warranted because I am still having symptoms such as dizziness, memory loss, and coordination issues. I feel I am going to have to visit another ER soon it just won't be that one. *I will also say that I had a previous visit to that hospital because of an abscess they believed was a spider bite that got infected. It was over the Thanksgiving holidays and I knew it was infected but I had family in town and didn't want to ruin Thanksgiving. So after getting Thanksgiving dinner done I rushed down to the hospital because my arm was about twice the size as normal and the pain was very intense but that was on me for waiting so long to get it attended to. I had to sit in waiting room for 5 hours because it was Thanksgiving night and they only had 1 doctor on duty. I would have waited longer but a group of about 6 or 7 people who had been waiting(according to them) anywhere from 6 to 8 hours all decided to get up and leave at once and go to the ER about 10 miles up the road like they were protesting. I stayed with the 2 people who arrived after me and 2 minutes later the nurse came out calling out name after name until she got to mine. It was kinda funny. So I got in and they did take really good care of me then. So I've had good and bad experiences with this hospital. If it's serious I would go elsewhere. If it's minor than you will be properly cared for.
