We have been here for 1 week. My husband had vascular surgery. The staff is wonderful. Efficient and caring. Dr Hager and his surgical team are aces! Everyone made our stay great, they made sure my husband was comfortable. Nurse managers talked to us, administrative personnel came to make sure, discharge planner came daily. Brought us a daily plan of care. Made sure we had everything we would need at home. We drive 3 hours from WV . I've been in medical care career for 30 yrs. One of the best hospitals I've been in! Excellent

8 years ago I had a terrible surgical experience at St. Margaret’s hospital. When I came to the ED 3 weeks ago with a bowel obstruction, surgery was the last thing I was expecting. I was told I had a surgical emergency and needed surgery that same day to correct the problem. Since the prior surgeon and her team was no longer there, we gave St. Margaret’s a second chance. Unfortunately for me, this was a huge mistake. While the surgery itself seemed to go well and resolve the obstruction, I ended up having a significant post-op bleed requiring interventions. I understand that sometimes complications after surgery cannot be controlled however, the entire post-op management of this complication has been a nightmare. Instead of immediately addressing this issue, I was kept in the hospital for 15 days total. During this time, the blood in my abdomen became infected and for almost 3-4 days, we reported fevers/chills/increased pain to the surgeons that told me this was “normal” and that I didn’t need any further testing or interventions. It wasn’t until my temp hit 102.8 that they even considered getting an updated CT scan, ordering tests for post-op infection, and starting antibiotics. I was told after that, that I did not have an infection and antibiotics weren’t warranted despite my symptoms of infection. My husband had to threaten to transfer me to a different hospital in order to be heard by the surgical team and once antibiotics were started, my symptoms started to improve (surprise surprise). After 8 days of IV antibiotics, one drain placement with drainage of some of the abdominal hematoma, I was deemed well enough to go home. I was prescribed oral antibiotics to continue to take at home. At my post-discharge appointment, I explained that I was still having sweats and low grade temps which seemed of no concern to the surgeon. Prior to the appointment, yet another CT scan was obtained showing multiple (approx 4) distinct areas of hematoma. I was sent to IR for drainage only to be told the areas are now clotted and there is nothing that could be done. I asked my surgeon’s office what the next step was and was told to “just go home and keep doing what you’re doing”. One day after this appointment, I became more ill at home, had increased pain and a temp of 102 despite 1000mg of Tylenol and knew I had to seek medical care at a hospital, yet again. Due to my now 2 terrible experiences at St. Margaret’s hospital, I sought care elsewhere and by the time I was evaluated in the ED, my WBC was 21…which means that what I was told by the prior surgeon to “just go home and do what you’re doing” failed. This surgeon failed me. St. Margaret’s failed me, again. I will never return to St. Margaret’s hospital ever again and neither will any of my friends or family. Furthermore, the communication between the surgical residents, the patient and the actual surgeon stinks. We were given conflicting information many times while inpatient by all of these people which is unacceptable. The nurse that discharged us taught us how to use the drain but also misinformed us of how to flush it which was also very upsetting to discover a week later. We attempted to report these issues while in the hospital to an administrative staff person which resulted in her giving us some free parking tickets and a few vouchers to the cafeteria. After all we had been through, absolutely insulting. Seems to me that the staff at St. Margaret’s on all levels need an overhaul. Now I get to suffer the fallout of this disastrous experience. Absolutely unacceptable.
