Services Used:

I came to Dublin Methodist Hospital for a lumbar puncture on 11/1/21. Dr. Smillie and team were pretty great overall. But the ER WAS HORRENDOUS. I had a full body paralysis episode during/after the procedure- not as a direct result of it- but because I get those if I'm under extreme stress- among other triggers such as heat, excercise, etc. I was admitted to the ER for observation, and was not treated well, but rather like a "crazy faker". They were asking me psych-related questions- probably thinking the problem was "all in my head", or maybe that I was on drugs or something. They kept saying, "Spinal taps don't cause this". We had NEVER said that. In fact, we had WARNED the doctor and nurses that I have paralysis episodes, and it could happen there, triggered by the stress. Apparently the ER didn't get that memo. The irony? The spinal tap was actually to try to diagnose what was causing my mobility/paralysis issues. The ER REFUSED to let my husband back into the room, saying they needed to get me checked in first?... Even though, at that point I could NOT SPEAK. When I go into severe paralysis episodes, my voice goes too. (Which the "Imaging Services" department knew.) They wouldn't allow my husband to come in and help answer the questions. Instead, they kept trying to force me to answer, practically yelling at me. The episodes sometimes last several hours- I was in the worst of this one for probably about 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours (my husband was trying to keep track), and I FINALLY was able to speak enough to start answering questions, starting out with a sort of raspy whisper. No one really seemed to want to try to help, but rather didn't really seem to want to believe what was clearly happening right in front of them.

The worst of it though- there was a nurse in the ER who was a COMPLETE JERK. He burst in the door with, "Wakey, wakey, sleeping beauty!!" As though I was a nine year old who just wanted to sleep. It felt EXTREMELY condescending. He then proceeded to pinch my fingers to try to get a response, using some sort of little device. He pinched my thumb SO HARD, that the next day, it was still a little sore. It hurt for hours. I was FURIOUS. It was completely unnecessary to pinch me that hard.

If this is the best staff you can produce in your ER, Dublin Methodist Hospital, that is extremely sad.

I should add that when I'm in a paralysis state, I can hear everything, but like it's through a thick fog. I can see some things, as much as my eyes will open for anyways. I know generally what's being done to me, I just can't move- for the most part at least. They asked me to squeeze a hand with mine and push with my feet, and I was able to give just the very tiniest, very jerkiest movement in response. That is absolutely ALL the function I have at that point, in addition to some funtion in my eyelids and jaw, and spontaneous movement like breathing and coughing.

All in all- THANK YOU, Dublin Methodist Hospital, for a truly HORRIBLE experience!!!!
