Showed up for Scheduled surgery at Kootenai outpatient. “Michelle” put in my IV, I told her repeatedly I didn’t think the IV was in properly as my hand hurt a lot and the saline bag was NOT dripping. Michelle would pull on the catheter and the IV drip would start dripping. But only when she pulled back on the catheter Proving the catheter was up against the vein wall. As soon as she would release the catheter the saline would stop dripping. My hand was red, swollen and sore. Michelle REFUSED to give me a new IV although I requested, she change the IV site repeatedly. I have PTSD, and have a phobia of needles. Michelle used my phobia against me, stating, “if I take it out, I’ll have to stick you again. You don’t want that do you?” After telling Michelle multiple times I was not comfortable going into surgery with an IV that was not properly working, she still refused to correct my IV. I finally demanded that she bring in someone to correct my IV. Someone else came in who agreed my IV was not running properly and gave me another IV. It took them 2 more “sticks”, but I didn’t mind. I wanted peace of mind going into surgery. A patient should not have to be paying more attention and having to demand the nurses do their job properly. Very disappointing!!! And very nerve wracking, I was terrified to go into surgery with a fouled catheter. I have had probably over 200 IVs in my lifetime, I know when an IV is not properly working.
