Last October, my Kaiser Pain Management specialist, Neil Mandalaywala performed a modest steroid injection in my lumbar spine. The procedure was completed at the Bakersfield Specialists Surgical Center. I found the staff there to be supremely supportive and expert and the facilities were ideally configured to minimize risks or poor outcomes:

• Pre-procedure forms were sent well in advance of the event. They were detailed and reassuring as to what drugs (both Rx and OTC) to avoid at different time periods before the procedure.
• Scheduling was achieved well in advance of the event, with full disclosure of my co-pay and a more refined, detailed, evaluation of my Rx/OTC regimen. My request for “earliest possible” procedure time was honored.
• The outside of the facility is rather simple (gray “office modern” style) and well maintained.
• Inside, the entire focus of the facility was EXTREME CLEANLINESS, EXTREME ORGANIZATION, and FLAWLESS prep and procedure completion.
• I do not recall seeing any art work—and that’s reassuring as it reflects an absolute dedication to avoidance of infection or poor outcomes. Likewise, all floors, walls, desks were totally clean and uncluttered—more so than any hospital I have ever visited.
• The staff was largely mature adults who, to me, were conducting an uncommon form of “performance art” by their perfectly synchronized repetition of “steps” or acts they had obviously made thousands of times before! [Dr. Mandalaywala, himself a Kaiser Permanente specialist, estimates he has performed more than 10,000 steroid injections.]
• E-v-e-r-y nurse, technician, and other aide exhibited uncommon skill and sincere concern for my welfare. Nothing they did impaired my sense of modesty or detracted from my optimistic mental state that I was receiving the best of care from supremely trained TEAMS integrated into a seamless whole.

The current “Covid” crisis has induced some feelings of concern about the “state of the art” of medicine with regard to a number of issues. However BSSC was just so “right” with everything that I would never feel hesitant to accept a referral to that facility and its awesome staff. God bless them all.
