Dr. Halbreiner earned his medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C. He completed his general surgery internship at Boston University Medical Center in Boston, Mass., and his residency at SUNY - Stony Brook in New York serving as administrative chief resident and research fellow. He trained in cardiothoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland, Ohio, where he served as administrative chief resident.

He has held academic appointments as clinical instructor in surgery at SUNY - Stony Brook and at Case Western Reserve University Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. He is currently an Associate Professor of Surgery at Drexel College of Medicine and has appointments as an Adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He also serves as Associate Program Director for the Thoracic Surgery training program.

Dr. Halbreiner has done research and presented to medical audiences around the country. He is a published author of articles and book chapters in peer-reviewed medical journals and publications. He currently is an NIH-funded researcher and serves as Co-Director of Research for the Cardiovascular Institute.

He holds memberships with several professional organizations including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Thoracic Society.
