I came to Philadelphia in 1991 after completing my residency in adult psychiatry at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village, New York City, NY. I then completed a Department of Veteran’s Affairs Fellowship in Addiction Medicine from the Penn/VA Center for the Study of Addictions in 1993. My responsibilities included having served as Medical Director of the Treatment Research Center of the Center for the Studies of Addiction (O’Brien Center) for 7 years, as well as membership on the Penn Institutional Review Board for Human Studies, Penn Medical School Student Standards Committee, the Conflict of Interest Standing Committee of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Pre-Conference Course Committee of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.
From my work as the consultant psychiatrist for the liver transplant team of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, I became an NIH and VAMC grant funded investigator, focusing my interests on the treatment of psychiatric and addictive disorders in solid organ transplant patients. I have had the privilege of being invited to deliver lectures throughout the United States in the field of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. I have received a number of clinical, research, and teaching awards, but the one that I am proudest of is the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching from the University of Pennsylvania.
I was also honored to be the Director of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and the Psychiatric Emergency Evaluation Center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 2006-2016. Presently, I am the Chief Psychiatric Consultant for the Penn Transplant Institute and founder and Program Director of the ACGME accredited Fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania/Penn VAMC, Perelman School of Medicine.
I enjoy trying to keep up with my very active family in a variety of sports and helping my wife with her non-profit start-up: The Philly Goat Project (PGP). PGP provides animal assisted therapy to children and adults with special needs and community engagement to residents of the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. When I get time, I also enjoy traveling and sculling and kayaking on our beautiful local rivers.
