Pain Management
Brian Freed, DO, specializes in interventional pain management with a focus in spine and neuropathic pain conditions. He utilizes noninvasive procedures to provide relief while maximizing function. He is currently Chief of Pain Management at Summit Medical Group.
Having trained at one of the top pain management programs in the country, the University of Virginia’s Anesthesiology-Pain Management Fellowship, Dr. Freed was provided the opportunity to learn the safest approach to complex pain procedures. He utilizes these learned skills to help patients with a variety of spine conditions from the cervical region to the coccyx, complex regional pain syndrome, sympathetic mediated pain, chronic knee pain, compression fractures, scoliosis and post-laminectomy syndrome.
Dr. Freed has a special interest in neuromodulation for the treatment of neuropathic pain. His background in physiatry, gained at NYU Rusk Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine, enables him to treat the patient on a whole, not just their symptoms.
Dr. Freed believes that the key to a successful outcome is getting to know his patients and their goals prior to creating a treatment plan. His philosophy is to treat acute and chronic pain conditions with the most conservative option first, only recommending invasive procedures as a last resort. He greatly enjoys helping his patients return to their normal, productive lives.
Helping tackle the opioid crisis in the state of New Jersey, Dr. Freed took part in the 2019 New Jersey Healthcare Executive Leadership Academy. Through NJHELA physicians, hospitals, and health insurance companies worked together to develop and formally present solutions to combat this crisis.
Dr. Freed holds a certification in acupuncture, is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and is board certified in pain management. He is the author of various publications relating to pain management, complementary and alternative medicine, and psychiatry and has been a guest speaker on a state and national level.
When he is not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children. Dr. Freed enjoys an active lifestyle that includes going to the gym, playing tennis, and forever working to perfect his golf game.
Pain management is a wide branch of medical study, and it can include a complete range of different therapies for those suffering from pain. Since pain can come from many parts of the body for different reasons, the solutions will differ greatly. Some doctors will prescribe pain medication to their patients, but in recent years, there has been a push to explore more medication-free pain management options, such as physical therapy, surgery, and even acupuncture and other alternative therapies.
