Dr. Sonnenberg is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He trained in general orthopedics and subspecialized in shoulder and hand surgery. He practiced orthopedics for 35 years in Chicago and has recently relocated to the Salt Lake Valley.After graduating from Brigham Young University, Dr. Sonnenberg attended medical school in Chicago at the University of Illinois as an Edmund James Independent Scholar. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society while at the U of I. He completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh mentoring under the legendary Dr. Albert B. Ferguson. Dr Sonnenberg received specialty hand surgery training in the University of California system.In addition to his civilian orthopedic activities, Dr Sonnenberg served as a combat surgeon for the US Army. He completed tours of duty in both Afghanistan and Iraq and was retired from the service with the rank of Lt Colonel. His Combat Medic Badge for service under fire is one of his most cherished distinctions.
