IN THE MILITARY
After completing his internship training in 1997, performance and good fortune directed Captain Crawford to the duties of Flight Surgeon for a Special Operations unit in the Republic of Korea. He flew throughout the Pacific theatre on helicopter search and rescue, MEDEVAC, and contingency missions along with Special Operations teams from the Navy, Army, and Air Force.

He provided medical care to troops and to civilians on humanitarian missions in such places as Thailand, the Philippines, Guam, and even the Gobi Desert and high steppes of Mongolia. For these efforts, the Air Force provided Captain Crawford with a unique medical and cultural education in addition to naming him the Air Force Special Operations Flight Surgeon of the year for 1999.

While serving in Germany (1999-2001), Captain Crawford participated in missions throughout Europe and Africa, including serving as a public health official during Operation Shining Hope in Kosovo. He also served as the medical coordinator for the Department of Defense Manned Space Flight Support Office for NASA Space Shuttle Operations in Europe and Africa. He received the Meritorious Service Medal before his honorable discharge in 2001.
