Overview

Amisha Patel, MD, MS is a cardiologist specializing in coronary interventions and structural heart disease. She is a clinician-researcher with a special interest in the use of precision medicine to guide the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases. Her research interests also include global cardiovascular health and evaluating the facilitators and barriers to cardiac care in the developing world. She currently is principal investigator of a philanthropic/research grant that studies structural heart disease in pregnant women in underserved maternal health clinics in Hyderabad, India. Since 2017, Dr. Amisha Patel has been the principal investigator of a research and philanthropic project studying the prevalence of rheumatic heart disease in pregnant women in India. Screening echocardiograms are performed in prenatal clinics at government hospitals to identify the presence of structural heart disease. Those who are identified with an abnormality are then referred to a tertiary care center for further medical and procedural management, including balloon mitral valvuloplasty. To date, over 10,000 women have been screened free of charge and hundreds have been treated either with medicines or procedures. Results of the preliminary work have been presented at national meetings in the US and India. Dr. Patel received her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan Medical School in 2009 and a Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation from Northwestern University in 2015. She completed her internship and residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT and her clinical cardiology fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. She has also completed an advanced fellowship in interventional cardiology and structural heart disease at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center in 2017. She has extensive research training, and has been awarded research fellowships from the National Institutes of Health and the United States State Department. Dr. Patel is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and sees patients at Columbia University Medical Center in Washington Heights, New York and at Lawrence-NYP Hospital in Bronxville, New York.
