Shaiquel Arefin Jilani was the assigned hospitalist for my husband at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, CA in September 2022. The experience was an absolute nightmare.
After 5 days in the hospital, I discovered that my husband had not been given Carvedilol, a medication used to treat his advanced cardiomyopathy because his blood pressure was “too low.” I explained to the nurse that low blood pressure is a side effect of the drug and he has been on it since it was used experimentally for cardiomyopathy in 1995, and it saved his life. This information was relayed to Jilani and he still refused to authorize the drug. A search on the internet brings up this result: “Carvedilol: a medicine used to treat high blood pressure and prevent angina, heart disease and stroke.”
Jilani came to the room and started to tell me my husband’s blood pressure was too low for Carvedilol. As I began to explain the situation, he was extraordinarily condescending, talked over me and absolutely refused to listen. Here’s a direct quote: “I’ve been doing this for a few years and I know what I’m doing.” This is a very dangerous man. At that point I told him to leave the room and he refused. I had the charge nurse kick him out and fired him as our hospitalist. I later discovered that Jilani had also withheld the 3 other prescribed heart meds my husband takes. JILANI WITHHELD ALL FOUR OF THE HEART MEDICATIONS FOR FIVE DAYS causing my husband to go downhill fast.
In addition, the first time we met Jilani he announced that a test showed my husband had pancreatic cancer. This diagnosis was out of the blue and entirely unexpected. My husband’s doctors had thought his pain was due to an esophageal issue. To say that this diagnosis was devastating is an understatement. Jilani stayed with us for about 5 minutes and exhibited zero compassion or caring. His matter-of-fact, uncaring manner was inhumane.
To say that Jilani’s standard of care deviates from acceptable would massively trivialize the situation. He actively harmed my husband.
